Waitress Salary

A waitress is a female server at a bar or restaurant. Their primary responsibility is to take orders, serve food and drinks to guests and customers, provide a pleasant dining experience, then take away used dishes. Following the guests meal, they may also be responsible for clearing away all dirty dishes and cleaning the table or dining area.

Being a waitress, or server, is a very common job that many people hold at one point in time or another. The job is frequently criticized for long hours, poor wages, and having an entire paycheck depend on the gratuity claimed from customers. This is entirely dependent on the type of restaurant or bar you are employed at. Many of the upper class restaurants will pay better and will typically have bigger tippers.

There is no formal education to become a waitress, with the exception of on the job training. The majority of bars and restaurants will provide you with a training period to familiarize yourself with the menu and the establishment. While there is no formal training to be a waitress, experience does help. Working in the food service industry, either in a production or service role, can help your chances of finding higher paying waitress jobs.

Waitresses should also have a positive personality and good communication skills.

The average salary range for a waitress is between $2.50 and $8.00 an hour. This means a salary range of between $5,000 and $16,000 a year based on a 40 hours work week. While these waitress salary ranges seem very low, they do not include tips, which is where majority of the waitresses revenue comes from. Standard practice is for customers to tip between 15 and 20 percent of their total bill. Depending on the type of restaurant, some waitress can walk out with $50 a shift, and others could walk out with $500. Typically, the higher class restaurants tend to have bigger tippers, mainly due to the large bills that come with the meals.

While being a waitress is typically not a career, it is a very profitable job. Many waitresses are just starting out in the professional world, or have discovered how to make a comfortable living serving.
