Travel Guide SalaryA travel guide, more commonly referred to as a tour guide, is a person who takes tourists and travelers on ventures through a city or area, highlighting many of the specific, more interesting, more historical, and even the unusual sights that make the area unique. The travel guide could be used for only a few hour tour through a very specific area, or they can lead groups for weeks through entire countries. It entirely depends on the type of traveler the travel guide is working with.
In addition to simply showing tourists the sights, they are also then responsible for showing them the culture of the area they are visiting. Since many areas that have travel guides offer a unique culture, allowing travelers to experience it will make more of an impact than the standard vacation tour. They are also responsible for making sure the travelers they are leading are kept safe and out of harm, unless that is what the tourists want.  Being a travel guide rarely requires a formal education, but rather a more in-depth local knowledge is needed. Knowing where to find the best local cuisine, a colorful story about the oldest church in the area, and having a unique view on the history of an area will do more than any college degree could.
In some area, primarily the more historical areas or areas of scientific discovery (working at a specific park or historical sites), having a degree can actually help. If you are working in a national park, having a degree in ecology could help you provide a more accurate analysis of the area. The average travel guide salary can vary greatly. The range is between $18,000 and $51,000 a year, depending primarily on the area or location their services are being offered at. The median salary for a travel guide is $40,000, with the average salary coming in at $34,500.
In most cases, travel expenses, if needed, are covered by the company you are working for. This can be extremely beneficial depending on the area of the world you are working in.
