Most translators get a bachelor's degree in a language or specialty area, then have additional experience working with both languages in the field they are specializing in. For those who are going to be translating speech, being able to accurately and precisely translate is key. One small communication error could be disastrous. Having computer skills is also essential. The majority of translation is done on electronic documents, and there is even a large field of translating computer codes into different languages. The average salary range for a translator is between $11 and $42, depending highly on the levels of experience and the nature of the work. The makes the normal salary range for a translator between $22,000 and $84,000. The rarity of the language is also key. While there may be many Spanish to English translators, finding one the does Chinese to Spanish mean a higher salary range. The median salary for a translator is $44,000 a year.
Working freelance is one of the big money makers for a translator. By working freelance, they can typically charge a higher rate. It is not uncommon for a freelance translator to charge over $50 an hour. Those who can translate between rare language combinations will be able to seek a higher amount.
