They are responsible with the collection and analysis of information, then collecting it into an easy to understand form. They collect data through a number of means, including giving surveys, experimentation, and using data that has already been collected. Statisticians work in a almost every field from economics to sports. They are the ones who keep numerical records on almost everything.
Statisticians create a number of relationships between certain groups. One of their primary tools is known as sampling, or taking a small section of a larger group to represent the whole.  To become a statistician in any field, the minimum educational requirement is a master's degree in either statistics or math. Due to the highly competitive field and job market, most statisticians go on to get a doctorate in statistics. Generally, statistics is the preferred area of study, since it deal more with the relationships between numbers and will provide a more theoretical base for statistical work.
In addition to collegiate experience with statistics and upper level mathematics, having a strong grasp of computer science will also be beneficial. Many of the newer statistics methods can be done electronically on a computer, or programs can be written to do most of the work for you. The median salary for a statistician is $65,750, with the average statistician salary range being between $48,000 and $89,000. This makes the average statistician salary around $68,500. It is not uncommon to find senior statisticians making well over the $100,000 mark, but this comes with additional supervisory responsibilities and years of experience.
As a general rule, certain industries and employers pay more. Working in the biomedical field or working for the federal government will give you the highest statistician salary. Being a statistician means being able to represent almost anything through numbers, whether it be the number of home runs a player has this season compared to the rest of the league or who many people in America watched a particular television show.
