Reporter SalaryA reporter is a person who gathers information and writes stories for a publication, like a newspaper or magazine. Reporters (journalists) are responsible for creating the unique copy that appears in the majority of publications. Some are required to provide photographs, while others may be charge with doing some layout and design, or may help with the generation of story ideas.
There are two basic types of reporters, primarily based on the types of stories they write. Those are the beat reporter and the general assignment reporter. Beat reporters work frequently with the same subject matter and a long list of sources. The beat reporter will typically work with a specific subject (like a particular sports team) or a particular area (all news dealing with a particular area of a town (only stories about downtown). The general assignment reporter typically works on whatever story the editor gives them. They may be asked to cover a concert one day and a murder the next.  To become a news reporter, you will typically need a combination of experience and education. In most cases, students get degrees in journalism, public relations, communications, or English. This must be combined with experience in news gathering, primarily working at a smaller newspaper of publications. While in college, working for student run publications or gaining experience through internships and co-ops will greatly increase you chances of finding employment.
Those with extensive experience in the news writing business may be able to bypass getting a degree, but it is still highly advised. Also, maintaining a portfolio of your published work is essential to find employment in this field. Keeping a sample of everything you have published (that includes an attribution or bi-line) can provide prospective employers with proof that you can writer. The average reporter salary ranges from $22,000 to $60,000 a year for the standard reporter. The median salary for this field is $35,000, with the average salary being around $41,000 a year. A reporter salary increases with experience, especially when they stay with a particular publication.
Reporters can also supplement their income by doing freelance work for other publications, which typically pay by the piece written. q Being a reporter means spending long hours interviewing many people and writing stories to inform the general public about what is going on in the world around them.
