There are two distinct types of publishers, the desktop publisher and the magazine publisher. The desktop publisher is by far the more common. Where the magazine publisher is essentially responsible for every aspect of a publications, down to finance and covering production costs, the desktop publisher is responsible for combining graphic elements and content into an attractive and readable publication. In addition to these basic responsibilities, the desktop publisher may also be responsible for creating and editing certain graphic elements, creating smaller publications and promotional materials, and even helping to place items online.

The desktop publisher now uses a series of advanced computer programs to help create attractive publications digitally for either placement online or to be sent to the printer.

Due to the highly competitive nature of this field, the desktop publisher needs to be fully trained in a number of publication techniques, including basic design elements and fundamental principles. Knowing every in and out of the standard publishing software used, HTML and internet coding, and the basic of graphic design are now essential to finding work in this field.

Where most desktop publishers used to be able to get by with an associate's degree, many are now needing a bachelor's degree or higher to find gainful employment. Typically, degrees are normally in communications, art, or graphic design. Experience is also essential. Many desktop publishers will have to prove they can perform the job by providing work samples in the form of a portfolio.

The average desktop publishers salary is between $24,500 and $42,000 a year, with the median salary coming in at around $32,500. The average salary for a desktop publisher working for a publication is around $33,250.

Many desktop publishers choose to work freelance to help either supplement or replace their income. It is not uncommon to find freelance desktop publishers making over $50,000 with the right clients.

Being a desktop publisher means learning how to tie a number of different elements together to create a complete finished product. This career path is also expected to grow tremendously through 2014, primarily due to the large transition from traditional media into new Internet technologies.
