Physicist SalaryWhat are physicists? They are scientists who explore motion and gravity, the structure and the behavior of matter and gases, both the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction that occurs between energy and matter. Basic forces and laws of nature are identified. These theoretical physicists investigate these areas without thinking about practical application, and they consider abstract concepts like time and origins of the universe. Some other physicists are more practical, with a concentration on the development of laser beams, transistors, development of computers, microwave appliances, and communications satellites. They are responsible for solving problems in the areas of medicine, defense, and industry.
Physicists can work in colleges and universities, but they can also find employment in hospitals, government agencies, and research centers. Some work in private industry and companies that produce electrical equipment, chemicals, missiles, and aircraft. Some of these physicists spend their time performing research, but others teach courses at universities. Many physicists will specialize in one area since physics is such a broad field.  In order to get most jobs as a physicist, graduate training is necessary. About four years are required for a bachelor's degree, and then another two for a master's degree. This type of degree will generally qualify your for a job working for the federal government or private industry in applied research. You may also be able to get a job teaching in a two year college or a high school. Most teaching jobs, however, require you to be certified or licensed to teach in your state, and a degree in education may be necessary. The majority of jobs in this field require a doctoral degree.
