A Magistrate is appointed by the U.S. district court judge in order to serve either an eight year full term or a four year part time term. A magistrate can be reappointed to the position. The job of a magistrate is to conduct a variety of judicial tasks in order to expedite the proceedings that take place in U.S. district courts. For this job, you must be able to be organized with excellent communication skills. You must be able to manage your time, listen actively, think criticaly, and read and write successfully and concisely.
A bachelor's degree as well as experience in the legal field are the minimum requirement for this position. However, in practice, a magistrate must have completed a law degree with a minimy of two to three years of law school. You must have a law degree and pass the bar exam before you can be selected to be a U.S. District Court magistrate.
