In addition to staff positions (which offer a strong salary), many grant writers work for companies and organizations on a freelance basis. The average grant writer freelance rate depends on the experience of the writer and how they charge. Some charge an hourly rate (usually from $50 to $70 an hour) or by the project (averages range between $1,000 to $8,000 per project, depending on the size an complexity).
