Emergency Medical Technician Salary

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs or paramedics) will work irregular hours, have people's lives resting in their hands on a daily basis, and are responsible for providing the first treatments that most injured people receive. The emergency medical technician respond to emergency call, administer what medical treatments can be given, and rush patients to a facility that can better care for their injuries or conditions.

EMTs are normally dispatched through a 911 operator to respond emergency calls. Once they arrive on the scene, they will provide necessary medical treatment so the patient can be transported to a proper medical facility for proper treatment. With this job, you will saves lives and lose lives, but you will be performing a necessary function. Without emergency medical technicians, more people would not make it to a facility for proper treatment.

There are educational courses designed specifically for emergency medical technicians. Through these, you will learn things like respiratory management, cardiac care, and how to treat most emergency situations, and how to get a patient moved from the scene of their injury to a proper medical facility. This can include things like driving the ambulance and knowing when to call for additional transportation options.

Following the training, you must be certified by the state you will be working to be an emergency medical technician. You certification must be renewed every 2 years (on average, it depends on the state).

The average emergency medical technician salary will range from $10 to $20 an hour. If areas were there is more of a need for EMTs (high accident area, highly populated areas) they may make more. The general salary, which is based on an hourly rate often comes with overtime, shift differentials, frequent increases based on the nature of the work.
