Diagnostic Medical Sonographer SalaryA diagnostic medical sonographer is a doctor similar to a radiologist, but instead of using radiation to create medical body images, they use sound waves instead. This division of body imaging is considered to be safer since images are created without the exposure to radiation. With sonography equipment, a sound wave is sent into the body, and an image is created digitally when the sound wave bounces off of the internal structures of the body. The sonography machine reads the reflected sound wave and creates an image.
The traditional body imaging techniques, essentially some type of x-ray, exposes the body to ionizing radiation, which while considered medically safe, does still expose the body to radiation necessarily. An ultrasound is a prime example of the type of body imaging techniques that a sonographer will be using on a daily basis. They are trained in all forms of sonographic imaging, including how to operate the machinery and how to interpret and render images for another doctor to use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Sonographic imaging techniques are also often used in interventional radiology procedures.  To become a diagnostic medical sonographer, you will need some type of formal education. The most common are two year medical programs offered by many different universities and colleges. During these two year programs, students will be exposed to a number of anatomy courses, technical classes on how to use the equipment, physiology, patient care, and medical ethics. In addition to the very popular two year degrees, there are also four year programs, training in an actual hospital setting (for those with a strong medical, scientific, or mathematics background), and training in the armed forces.
The two year degrees and certification programs can be found at most colleges, universities, vocational schools, and community colleges. Due to the high number of positions available for diagnostic medical sonographers, the average salary is around $27 an hour. While many will start out at between $17 and $27, salaries quickly increase as experience is gained on the job. It it not uncommon to see a diagnostic medical sonographer who is making over $32 an hour after only 10 years on the job.
To make the salary better, job security for this career path is exceptional. Most diagnostic medical sonographers will never have trouble finding work or keeping a job once they've found one. Medical sonography is quickly starting to replace more common radiological body imaging techniques. If current medical trends keep going the way they have been, the medical sonography will quickly be the next big thing in medicine.
