Dancer Salary

Dancers, in the most basic description of the profession, are those who interpret actions and emotions through movement, which can be done with or without music. Professional dancer typically work for a company, or a group of dancers who work on putting on performances. Dancing professionally can be difficult, since most dancers get their job through audition only, and their position has a finite lifetime. For whichever type of dance you do, whether it be ballroom, ballet, or any other style, the goal of most dancers it to find a salaried position with a company.

Becoming a dancer will involve long hours of rehearsal and practice, along with performances, which leads to a very erratic schedule at best. Many will have to travel extensively, along with having a large amount of strain, stress, and potential damage put on their body due to the nature of the job.

While having a degree can provide you with a large amount of knowledge, the only thing a dance degree will do is give you more of an opportunity to become a dance teacher or instructor. Those who want to be a professional dancer need to be well versed in their specific area of dance, be in peak physical condition, and be willing to take the jobs offered. Even in the most prestigious companies, dancers do not make as much as people think. They typically stay with the profession for their love of the art form, and they would not be happy in any other type of job.

The average professional dancer salary is between $15,000 and $35,000 a year. While this may not seem like much, many dancers will never have a standard full-time job dancing professionally. Many of their jobs only last for a season, or for a few select months before they have to find additional work. Some professional dancers make less than $12,000 a year dancing, while others can make well over $60,000. The median dancer salary is $30,000, while the average dancer salary is $25,000.

All of these figures exclude any additional work the dancer may do outside of dancing, and are reflective only of money earned through professional dancing.

Becoming a professional dancer is the dream of many different people. While they may be very difficult to get and keep, many will spend their entire lives working to make a living just dancing.
