Choreographer Salary
A choreographer is a person who designs dance sequences, but may also be employed to arrange any other type of human movement. Where as a musician composes music, a choreographer arranges dance. While many people will quickly associate these individuals with classic forms of dance, like ballet, they are actually employed by a large variety of group, each of which is focused on a certain needed for designed physical movement. The choreographer is essentially in charge of one or more of the following processes; design of the dance or movement series, preparing those who will be performing it, and updating the performance for the production they are working on.
To many, this may seem like a simple job, but it is actually a very difficult profession. Learning how to dance is only the first step, but also becoming versed in multiple styles of dance and then mastering them is the real challenge. On top of this, you must learn how to design unique routines for clients, including complete motions and lengthy series of movements.
To become a professional choreographer, you should start with dance at an early age and gain experience by choreographing smaller productions for schools and community groups. You will also need to get a degree in dance. Most universities offer B.F.A. and M.F.A. for dance.
The average choreographer salary is around $34,000 annually. This can range dramatically depending on the specific field you are in. Most choreographers will never make less than $27,000. The main place that many choreographers make their money is by doing freelance work for various organizations. Freelance choreography involves designed and creating routines for groups that do not have the need for a staffed choreographer.
