Cartographer Salary

A cartographer is who collects data and then turns it into maps. Using data obtained from aerial photographs and data, they turn that information into maps we commonly use and those directed towards specific need, like seafaring charts and survey diagrams. Because of the accuracy needed to turn this data and information into something people can easily use, a cartographer must have a close attention to detail, be able to accurately interpret data, and understand just how to collect all of this information.

Cartography is mapping science that has existed for thousands of years. While many of the older maps are not as accurate as the ones that exist today, the data we have available to us is much more accurate than the information they had at their disposal two thousand years ago.

In addition to being able to create maps from raw data, cartographers must be capable of reading and interpreting various types of maps and charts.

While cartography is a science, it is rare to find an educational institution that offers a degree in cartography. Most cartographers went through school focusing on engineering or physical science, then taking courses that emphasized cartography, mathematics, drafting, and surveying. Additional course in physical geography are also highly recommended.

Most entry level cartography jobs are earned through the development of a quality portfolio. Most college students develop a portfolio of maps they have created during their time in school. These work examples can help recent graduate to get their first job.

The salary range for cartographers is all over the place. At the very low end, cartographers working for private companies average around $46,000 annually, with those working for the government bringing in around $20,000 more a year. First year cartographers won't earn any less than $30,000 annually, and those with extensive experience commonly pulling in around $83,000.
