Cab Driver Salary

The cab driver has been the savior of many lost travelers, late night partiers, and businessmen for many years, and while many things change, they have luckily remained the same. Cab drivers tend to make a rather low rate of pay for the work they do. While the educational requirements are very low, their common knowledge and ability to get people where they need to be in a quick and efficient manner should still be respected. While the job is easy to get, can involve long hours, rude customers, pushy people, and poor pay, many people will still rely on cab drivers to get just where they need to go.

Most cab companies require that a cab driver has completed at least the eighth grade, with many moving up to requiring completion of high school or receiving and equivalent degree. Other than that general education requirement, cab drivers are required to have a drivers license that's in good standing and valid in the state they are planning on working. Along with this, a cab driver must have a clean driving record, good language skills (speaking the common languages in the area you are wanting to work), be at least 21 years old and you must pass an exam covering common driving laws and cab safety tips.

The cab driver salary depends primarily on the company they are working for. Most cab companies will have the cab driver earning a base pay along with tips. There are several additional factors that go into calculating the cab driver salary, including

Does the cab company pay for gas?
Do they provide a car?
Are you being paid a flat hourly rate or by the mile?
Are you allowed to accept and keep tips?

These all factor into the cab driver salary. Most cities provide a base rate of around $11.00 and hour, but may go as high as $20.00 based on experience and the area your are in. Some high risk areas will actually pay more than the standard fares. You will usually make tips on this base rate, which can dramatically raise your hourly rate.
