An atmospheric scientist is more commonly known as a meteorologist, or a person who studies the physical characteristics of the atmosphere. To become an atmospheric scientists, you will need a minimum or a bachelor's degree, with many positions requiring a higher level of education. The B.A. is normally only the first stage, and should be directed towards meteorology or atmospheric science. The majority of research positions will require a doctorate, and many positions with the federal governments will need at least a master's.

To increases their chances or employment, many atmospheric scientists get a second bachelor's or master's degree, typically in either another, closely related, science, journalism, or research based degrees.

Certification is also offered by the American Meteorological Society for those with experience in the field. Certification is not needed to gain employment, but it does help applicants chances of making a higher salary or getting a better position.

On average, an average atmospheric scientist salary is around $75,000, with the majority in the field pulling in between $55,000 and $95,000. Very few will make less than $40,000 annually. The rate of pay is based mainly on the organization you are working for, the type of position you have, and the highest degree you have. Research positions tend to pay the best, and atmospheric scientists who are working for the federal government tend to make around $10,000 more annually on average. Those with a doctorate and multiple degrees make more on average.
